The Hero in My Pocket is a unique resource for children whose lives are affected by the death of a U.S. military service member. With the death of their father -- their own "Special Hero" -- Greg, age 10, and Grace, age 7, find that children in military families often face additional losses compared to their non-military family peer group. As a key part of the process of mourning, Greg and Grace honor and remember their "Special Hero" and invite the reader to do the same using "Hero Pages" for drawing and writing.

 

The unique format also includes open-ended questions to encourage communication and understanding among children and adult caregivers. Along with the military themes, concepts on grief and recovery are age-appropriate, meaningful, and relevant to the relationship a child values with their own "Special Hero." Suitable for ages 6 to 12 years.

 

Author Marlene Lee earned her MA in Thanatology (bereavement studies) at Hood College and holds a BA in Communications from the University of Maryland. The Hero in My Pocket is her first book for children.
